How to reset an iPhone 7 & 7 Plus or enable DFU mode?

By losing its “physical” home button, the iPhone 7 has forced Apple to review the handling to make a “hard reset” or switch the iPhone to DFU mode (useful for installing a Version of iOS).

Reset iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

This procedure is safe for the data and allows to force the restart of an iPhone 7 which would no longer respond to any crash.

  1. Leave the ignition button pressed (on the right side of the iPhone)
  2. Press and hold the lower volume button (on the opposite side of the phone)
  3. Hold both buttons down until your iPhone 7 restarts and displays the white Apple logo on a black background.

Pass the iPhone 7 in DFU mode

The DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode must be used to force the installation of a version of iOS different from that proposed by Apple. For example, to perform a downgrade, which involves installing an older version of iOS when a beta (or official version) is a problem on your device.

  • Turn off your iPhone 7 and plug it into a Mac (or PC) with the Lightning cable and make sure iTunes is launched.
  • Press and hold the iPhone’s power button for 3 seconds.
  • While holding down the power button, press and hold down the lower volume button. Keep both buttons pressed for 10 seconds. Note: the screen should remain black, if you see the Apple logo, you have stayed too long and have done a hard reset, so you have to start over.
  • Release the power button but keep pressing the lower volume button for 5 seconds. If your iPhone 7 prompts you to connect to iTunes, it’s still missed. Back to square one.
  • The success of the operation is confirmed by a dialog box in iTunes indicating that you are in recovery mode.
